Help Send Wheatley 8th Grade Students
to New York City
All 8th grade Wheatley students have an opportunity to earn an End of Year (EOY) Field Study. This year’s field study will be in New York City. It is our intent that this trip will not only inspire and provide an opportunity that most of our students would not otherwise access, but will further enhance inquiry-based learning and collaboration in the following areas:
Arts & Culture – students will be immersed in the rich and diverse cultures while on this trip. Among many things, students will see a Broadway show, visit the New York Museum of Modern Art, Times Square, Central Park, the neighborhoods of Brooklyn and Harlem - home to the great writers of the Harlem Renaissance. Students will be able to compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the culture of New Orleans that of the communities in which we will visit.
American History – students will get to relive major historical events firsthand and develop a deeper understanding of how the past has shaped the country we live in today. Students will visit the Statue of Liberty, Tenement Museum, and all monuments and memorials.
College & Career – students will participate in college tours (e.g., Columbia, New York University, Howard University) and visit and speak with key executives at Uber, American Express, and BET/Viacom.
In order to represent our network in New York City, we have to raise $25,000 to fund the trip. The money is necessary to cover transportation, accommodations, and admission to the attractions our scholars will be attending. We’re contacting community leaders, family, and friends like you to request financial assistance.
May we count on your tax-deductible support? Any amount you can donate will be greatly appreciated, and will go directly toward funding this important educational experience. A donation of:
$20 will buy a student breakfast for one day
$50 will buy a student lunch and dinner for one day
$100 will cover admission to selected attractions 2 scholars
$300 will cover the cost of the flight for one student
$1,350 will cover the total cost for 1 student to attend the trip
Our scholars thank you for your consideration!
