Support Wheatley's "Big Class" Project!
Due to the success of last year's program, Phillis Wheatley Community School is raising funds to conduct its second "Big Class" writing project! The mission of New Orleans organization Big Class is "to cultivate and support the voices of New Orleans' writers ages 6-18 through creative collaborations with schools and communities." Students are able to work with professional tutors, artists, copy editors, and designers over a period of several weeks to help them write and publish their own compilation book that will be available in local libraries. Students will celebrate their book release with a public reading in front of family and community members.
For this year's project, three third grade classes will take inspiration from Louisiana folk tales. In addition to exposing students to various real-life publishing applications, we believe that giving students the authority to write their stories gives them a voice and a source of power. That is why we are working to raise $5000 to make this year's Big Class a reality. Thank you!
